Scott Dietzen took Pure Storage from its 16th hire to a 2015 IPO, studied under Geoffrey Hinton at Carnegie Mellon, and now runs an AI coding company. His prediction cuts against the panic: the world is going to hire more software engineers in the years ahead, not fewer.
Scott is a four-time entrepreneur with a PhD in machine learning from Carnegie Mellon. He helped grow WebLogic from zero to a billion dollars in revenue in five and a half years, served as CTO of BEA Systems, and led Zimbra as President and CTO through its acquisition by Yahoo. As CEO of Pure Storage, he scaled the company from 15 engineers to roughly 2,000 employees and a billion dollars in revenue, took it public in 2015, and still serves on its board as the business has passed three billion in revenue. He is now CEO of Augment Code, an AI coding assistant built for professional engineers working in large, complex codebases.
He explains:
Why he believes this generation of AI will lead to more software engineers being hired, not fewer, and which parts of the job it actually takes over
How Pure Storage sold flash storage at the price of spinning disk, and why customers refused to believe the pitch until they saw it run
Why good design partners convert into customers at near 100 percent, and how to recognize the ones that never will
Why he hates counter-offers, believes accepting one breaks trust for good, and what he does with compensation instead
How walking the entire company through the board deck keeps information from becoming a political weapon
Why he stepped down as Pure Storage CEO right after a successful IPO, and how he timed the announcement so the market never smelled bad news
